I am, at heart, a free-tier parasite. I will squeeze a free plan until it begs me to upgrade, and only then do I consider paying. Over the past year I’ve tried dozens of “free” AI tools, and most of them are free the way a free sample is free – technically, but useless. These fifteen are genuinely useful. No card required.

- ChatGPT – the free tier is still the best all-round writing assistant, full stop.
- Claude – better long-form English quality, generous free limits.

- Kimi – paste in a 200-page document and ask questions. Free and shockingly good at it.
Search and research
- Perplexity – AI search with citations. The free tier is limited but real.
- Gemini – free tier with deep Google integration.
Productivity
- Notion – free personal plan, AI trial included. The AI is a bonus; the notes app is the real product.
- Grammarly – the free tier catches the embarrassing stuff. Keep it on.
- Canva Magic Studio – free AI design tools inside Canva. Good enough for 90% of non-designers.
Images and media
- Ideogram – free AI images, and it renders text in images better than anything else.
- Leonardo AI – generous daily credits, good for concept art.
- CapCut – free video editor with AI captions and effects. The watermark is the price.
Meetings and audio
- Fireflies – free meeting transcription with a monthly minute allowance.
- Otter – free transcription for shorter meetings.
- Whisper (local) – free and unlimited if you can run it on your own machine.
How to actually use free tiers
