Ask three people which notes app is best and you’ll get three different religious wars. I’ve lived in all three of the big ones at various points in the last year, so here’s my unscientific but honest take – and which one the AI features actually tipped the balance on.
Notion – the AI that changed my workflow
Notion’s AI isn’t the flashiest, but it’s the most integrated: highlight text, ask it to summarize, expand, translate, fix grammar – it just works inside the page you’re already in. The trade-off is that Notion is a platform, not a notes app. You’ll spend a weekend setting up your database system before you ever write a note. Worth it if you love structure; a nightmare if you just want to capture a thought.
Evernote – the old guard, still good at capture
Evernote’s AI features are fine – AI search and summarization – but the real draw is still the capture pipeline: web clipper, email-to-note, scan anything. If you live in a browser and collect everything, Evernote is the least-friction home for it. The AI is a bonus, not a reason to switch.
Obsidian – maximum control, AI via plugins
Obsidian is the power user’s choice: local files, markdown, endless plugins. AI requires setup (bring your own API key, or use community plugins), which is either freedom or friction depending on who you are. If you already live in Obsidian, its AI plugins are genuinely good – if you don’t, don’t start here for the AI.
So which one wins?
My honest answer: Notion for the AI, Evernote for capture, Obsidian for control. Most people should start with Notion – it’s free, the AI is built in, and the learning curve pays off. Evernote if you never want to think about structure. Obsidian only if you’re already sold on its way of doing things.
